Reliability &
Infrastructure
• MVU added 80 Megawatts of electrical capacity with the
completion of the Kitching Substation in 2017. This new substation
provides enough capacity to satisfy existing and future electrical
demand due to the recent development of more than 8 million
square feet of new industrial space.
• During fiscal year 2017/2018, the City began the process
of acquiring Street Lights from Southern California Edison.
Additionally, MVU will upgrade the High Pressure Sodium lighting
technology used in approximately 11,257 street lights to state of
the art LED fixtures. The LED lights will reduce maintenance
costs and provide better light patterns on both residential and
arterial streets throughout the City. The LED Retrofit Project is
scheduled to break ground in December 2018.
• To improve service reliability MVU has designed two important
infrastructure improvement projects. The Alessandro and
Heacock Crosstown Ties will install over 23,000 linear feet of
12kV backbone equipment. Design of the two crosstown ties was
completed in September 2018 and construction is scheduled to
begin in February 2019. Once put into service the new distribution
infrastructure will allow MVU crews to more effectively identify
and isolate service disruptions, and restore power to customers
more quickly.
customer care standards
o PROVIDING SAME DAY RESPONSE
Resolving an issue or completing a request is seldom accomplished
in just a day, but striving to acknowledge the request the day it is
received provides “same day response” and exemplary service.
o KNOWING OUR BUSINESS
To provide accurate information, we must know our jobs and
have a thorough understanding of agency processes. Providing
accurate information is critical; to do so, we work with staff,
consult supervisors, conduct research, and keep up-to-date with
industry best practices.
