Reporting Mail Theft

All information is voluntary, but the more you provide, the more likely it is that the U.S. Postal Inspector can help you.

How to File a Report

There are two ways to file a report:

  • Online
    Report these issues to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service using the Online Reporting System. Select Mail theft under “Where is My Package”, enter the tracking number or select “No” and then click on “Continue” and enter all applicable information.
  • By Phone
    If you prefer to file your complaint over the phone, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service likes to keep its customers satisfied, and a new call center helps them do that. Customers and USPS employees nationwide now can dial one toll-free number, rather than looking up individual phone numbers, for the Postal Inspection Service’s many locations.
    Callers can reach the appropriate Postal Inspection Service office by dialing 1-877-876-2455 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in all time zones, and selecting from these options:
  1. Mail service issues [callers are then directed to 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777)]
  2. Emergency situations (24/7 assistance)
  3. Mail theft or identity theft issues, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777)
  4. Mail fraud issues
  5. Postal Inspection Service customer support

    Note that Option No. 2, Emergency situations, is automatically routed to a special operator for assistance if a call is made after business hours.

The Postal Inspection Service will contact you only if more information is needed. They gather data on mail-related crime to determine whether a violation has occurred. While they cannot guarantee recovery of lost money or items, your information can help alert Postal Inspectors to problem areas and possibly prevent others from being victimized. Inspectors base their investigations on the number, substance and pattern of complaints. They ask you to keep all original documents related to your complaint.
